Taming & Bonding

  • Bonding with your hamster will take time, as bringing home a hamster is bringing them into a new environment that it is not familiar with. Your new hamster will take time to gain your trust, and it is important to be patient. Taking it slow, and daily handling are the keys to success. There are several techniques that will help you to forge a bond with your new pet.

      • The Waiting: Allow 12-24 hours at the most for your hamster to get used to their new environment. Begin handling your hamster briefly each day at dusk or early evening as it is their natural time to wake up. Keep it short and positive.
      • Tissue Trick: One way to quickly get your hamster accustomed to your smell is to take a piece of toilet paper and rub it on your skin before placing it in your hamster’s nest. This way the hamster will associate your scent with warmth and safety.
      • Treat Trick: After the waiting period is over, using treats can help your hamster to warm up to you. If they don’t take the first treat, leave it in their cage and then try later or the next day. Go slow, and don’t rush things. Once they take the treat, you can begin trying to stroke their back while they eat it. The next step is to place the treat on your palm and let the hamster climb onto your hand.
      • Playpen Time: Using a playpen or bathtub with a stopper in the drain is good for your hamster to be able to smell you and be in your presence without you trying to pick them up. Use a large mug to transport your hamster to the playpen. Offer them treats and let them explore.
      • Talk Time: Talking to your hamster daily in a gentle voice will help them to get used to your presence. Do this while feeding your hamster, giving them treats, and petting them to have your hamster associate your voice with positive things.
