Wheels
- A proper-sized wheel will prevent a hamster from running with its back arched, and from running while constantly looking up.
- Wheels must have a solid running surface with no bars or wires.
A 10-12 inch wheel is recommended for a Syrian hamster, while 8 inches is the minimum for a dwarf hamster.
- Flying saucers should never replace a regular wheel, but can be used in a playpen to give the hamster exposure to different toys and activities.
- A 12 inch flying saucer can be used for a Syrian hamster while an 8 inch flying saucer can be used for a dwarf hamster.
- DO NOT USE WIRE WHEELS: These wheels are dangerous because they can cause bumblefoot. Additionally, hamsters can catch their feet between the bars, causing broken limbs or fur to be ripped out if caught.
